Who are We?
We are Bristol University's oldest (1954!) and most experienced club dedicated to all pursuits of climbing!
Our story
As one of the most active societies at the university, dedicated to a sport rapidly rising in popularity, our club and committee dedicate countless hours each week introducing new people into all types of climbing.
The ropes we currently use to teach our new members are up to 10 years old and whilst in safe condition, are not pleasant to handle and are in need of replacing due to wear. We are raising funds to replace these, so that climbing can remain accessible to all students and we can explore the great outdoors as well as perfect our skills indoors safely!
Where will the money go?
The ropes we are hoping to purchase to replace our old ones are:
- 3x 35m Edelrid 10.0 Python (for indoor climbing) - £240
- 2x 60m Mammut 8.0 Alpine Classic (for outdoor traditional climbing) - £140
- 2x 80m Mammut 9.8 Crag Classic (for outdoor sport climbing) - £210
Any additional funding past our stretch target will be put towards buying essential equipment for training and safety purposes, including rope protectors, assisted-braking belay devices and carabiners.
If we only meet our minimum target, we will buy as many of these ropes possible, with a focus on the 80 metre ropes. We hope to buy these from a dedicated climbing store in Bristol (Dicks / Bananfingers), with a discount to make sure your fundraising efforts are the most value for money! They will then be catalogued and tagged, and kept in our gear store in the Richmond building, which is available to all of our members to use - they will also be used well each Wednesday at our teaching sessions, and all future trips we go on!
We are incredibly grateful to anyone who contributes to our crowdfunding campaign and will make a post thanking each of our contributors on our social media (simply let us know if you don't want to be mentioned!).
Here are some of the things we get up to each week:
- Weekly indoor bouldering socials (Mondays at Flashpoint/Mothership)
- Weekly FREE TEACHING for roped climbing! Every Wednesday at Redpoint Bristol our committee volunteers 4 hours of their time teaching completely new members of the club how to rope climb - no experience is necessary and we provide all equipment needed.
- Weekly Pub Social on Thursday evenings.
- Day Trips (usually on a weekend) to a nearby outdoor climbing 'crag'.
- Weekend Trips to a staple climbing destination in the UK! The club doesn't profit from ticket sales, which makes participation in our trips incredibly accessible for new climbers and students in financial hardship.
