Who are we?
We are the student team representing the University of Bristol at the FSAI competition for the very first time this July.
Formula Student AI is part of the annual Formula Student UK competition run by IMechE. In FSAI, teams design and develop autonomous driving systems to compete on various tracks at Silverstone.
What is our mission?
Our goal is to provide a platform for Engineering and Computer Science students to work with machine learning and robotics systems. We want to make the competition accessible to all our members regardless of background, so any student is able to benefit from the incredible hands-on experience and networking that a national competition like FSAI brings.
We don’t charge a membership fee. We host workshops for new members who want to join our team, teaching them the core technology behind our systems, the Robot Operating System (ROS). We meet with our core team weekly to develop our autonomous driving system and the other deliverables required for the competition which test our broader understanding of autonomous driving.
The University of Bristol is a centre for AI in the UK — being awarded ‘AI University of The Year’ at the National AI awards. We aim to leverage this as we develop a competitive autonomous driving system with advanced AI capabilities.
Why we need your support
It costs £150 per person for camping at the competition in Silverstone, and we want to make sure all our team members can attend, without adding significant financial pressures to their student budgets.
We are also looking to buy hardware to support the development of our systems, allowing us to test our algorithms in the real world.
What we can offer
To thank you for your support, we will publish your name on our socials as one of our supporters. We will also provide ‘behind the scenes’ footage of us at the competition to show our key supporters what they helped make happen!
We have a dedicated team of software engineers from computer science, engineering and physics, who are all invested in machine learning and robotics. They have gained extremely valuable practical experience, not necessarily reflected in general academia.
