We are the University of Bristol Drama Society's team for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025. The Fringe is the world's largest performance arts festival.
After a competitive proposal process, we need your help to take our member-picked show Edward (In Memoriam) to Edinburgh between the 11 - 16 August 2025.
OUR Play
"If I am to be feared more than loved, by God, let me feared."
A 14th century king for a 21st century audience. The year 2000. England is at war with France. When the to-be King of England falls for his fellow soldier, their love threatens not only to destroy themselves but the establishment they believed would protect them.
Fusing fact and fiction, this reimagining of Christopher Marlowe's classic play is a bold take on Britain's forgotten past and present.
Our show aims to entertain and prompt important discussions by adapting Marlowe's gripping 14th century historic narrative to the 21st century. Exploring the changing landscape of the British Military feels even more relevant, given that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the British military lifting their ban on LGBTQ+ inclusion within the armed forces, our story is an apt way to mark this anniversary. Our play is of increasing importance in a world where we're seeing increasing hostility towards EDI initiatives.OUR TRACK RECORD
We've already received industry interest. The research and development of the play was funded by young people's charity, Artswork as part of an Arts Council England-support project. It's been praised as:
"A really engaging and emotive piece to read... [which] could make for a really powerful piece of theatre for Fringe. [It creates] an incredibly contemporary and almost speculative fiction of this world... [where] the parallels with modern life come through strongly." - Dr Emily Garside
HOW YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Please help us bring our ideas and passion to life! All money raised will go towards covering our venue, accommodation, set, costume and props. Any profit from the show, or if we exceed our fundraising target, goes back into the society to help invest in the next generation of young talent.
It's important, more now than ever, to support the next generation of artistic talent. The Edinburgh Fringe is an expensive process and your donations help mean that money is never the reason that people can't pursue their passion in theatre.
Breakdown of costs:
- Accommodation (one week): £1,920
- Venue Hire (one week): £1,700
- Production Costs (Set, Costume, Props): £270
- Marketing Costs: £170
Please note that these are approximate costings.
