As former Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol, Sir Eric is remembered fondly at Bristol for so many things. He oversaw the University through a hugely significant change in higher education. Throughout his time as Vice-Chancellor his vision for academic excellence in teaching and research always shone through and the University would not be the organisation is it today without his leadership.
As Vice-Chancellor he was extremely passionate about investing in students. He was committed to helping Bristol students pursue their talents and ambitions. He recognised their invaluable contributions as young people to our vibrant University community.
‘I'm fiercely proud of all our students. They make the university: they are its beating heart, and their values, talent and ambition are mesmerising.’ Sir Eric Thomas in 2015
Above all, Sir Eric saw the Bristol students of today as tomorrow’s pioneers. He recognised and advocated for Bristol minds to help solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
One of the ways his legacy will live on at Bristol is in the numerous scholarship provisions in place to support students facing financial barriers to higher education. Upon Sir Eric's departure from Bristol in 2015, a fund was created in his honour to help break down financial and social barriers for gifted students. As he said in 2015:'It is my hope that the legacy I leave behind at Bristol is one that speaks to excellence in academic achievement and an outstanding university experience for Bristol’s students.’
Thanks to Sir Eric’s passion and generosity for Bristol and its students, students at all levels of study have been able to receive much needed financial support during their studies. The impact of this assistance cannot be understated. It has removed the financial barriers that countless talented and determined students have faced when trying to access higher education. It has enabled them to focus on their studies and all the life-changing opportunities that Bristol has to offer so that when they leave Bristol, they aren’t held back from shaping the world around them.
In honour of Sir Eric’s unique and special legacy to Bristol, please consider making a donation to support today’s students in his memory. As well as helping ensure Sir Eric’s legacy lives on at Bristol, you’ll be helping bring the very best students to Bristol, ensuring that financial barriers place no limits on their achievements.
