We are asking for donations to help the University of Bristol Sailing Club purchase a new set of storm sails to match our beautiful new boats. We are aiming to raise £800 through donations.
Who are WE?
We are Catherine Sears (Club President/Commodore) and David Kramer (Treasurer). We are part of the University of Bristol Sailing Club (UBSC) executive committee.
The club provides sailing opportunities for all students, from total beginners to high performance sailors, in all 4 disciplines of British University Sailing (fleet racing, match racing, team racing, and yachting). We have had 2 incredible seasons since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, with the club coming 3rd in the 2022 BUCS league. Significant achievements include having consistently above 140 members per year, BUCS points achieved in all 4 disciplines (including BUCS Gold in match racing last year) and our ability to run courses in powerboat driving, first aid as well as RYA Levels 1 and 2.
our story
Storm sails, or cut-downs, are smaller sails that we use on our Fireflies in heavy winds. We need a new set as our current sails are no longer in working condition for training and racing use - they are around 15 years old and most have significant holes and patches all over. They are also mismatched shapes and the wrong colours for team racing, as only 2 are blue and 4 are white. These old storm sails compromise the quality of training and racing that Bristol Sailing can provide. New sails will help us to maintain the high standard that Bristol is known for, especially at the events we host such as The Bristol Brew, BUSA Qualifiers and BUSA Finals.
Your support will benefit all aspects of our club, as these sails would be used regularly by everyone from our beginner sailors to performance team racing squads. As the club continues to grow, we aim to provide high quality sailing for all, and these storm sails will be a valuable asset to UBSC for years to come.
Where will the money go?
Cost of a set of 6 storm sails/cut downs = £2,070
- £800 through fund raising
- £800 through match funding from Bristol alumni and friends
- £470 available funding from the club’s budget
