Raising funds for an annual memorial prize, remembering Tristan's creativity

Tristan

Tristan was an exceptional engineer, and a loved part of our cohort 2009-2014. He was our engineer's engineer. Many of the memories we are left with are from the devices he'd bring into uni. The drift bike made out of an old shopping trolley, the penny farthing, or a million other bikes, or the fairy lights flashing merry xmas in morse code.

We each hold our own memories of Tristan. He'd often be pulling your ear about some new music, planning his next adventure, off flying planes in the officer cadets, or trying to finesse making smoke rings from a pipe.

Tragically Tristan passed in a motorbike accident on holiday in Scotland in May 2019.

He lives on in our memories, and the life he helped via donation to the Antony Nolan trust.

The Prize

2024 was the inaugral year of the Tristan Horswell memorial prize. The prize is for the most creative problem solving skills during, and around their degree. It is for Engineering Design students at UoB, the course which we studied with Tristan.

Engineering degrees often focus on mathematics, and the prizes do too. This prize celebrates what Tristan loved, building things in the real world.

Our first winner, Henry Haslam, in their final year designed and prototyped a full scale novel gear using motorbike chain, a wonderful project, and he's a very deserved winner of the prize.

Where Will the Money Go

We intend to fund the prize for as long as possible. The first year's prize was for £250 and we would like to continue funding that amount going forwards, depending on funds raised, we may also reduce or increase the amount slightly.

Presenting the Prize

Each year it will be great to have someone who knew Tristan present the prize, and some may meet for a drink after. Please contact Tom, Paul or Arthur if interested in presenting the prize.
