Help underrepresented students get the support they need to grow their digital skills

A short summary of your project

We are aiming to raise £7860 to deliver a digital literacy project which will enable young people from underrepresented backgrounds to learn important programming  and employability skills.

Who are you?

We are The Faculty of Engineering Outreach and Widening participation team in collaboration with Creative Tuition Collective!  We have a track record for delivering high-quality, engaging programmes  that inspires the next generation of tech innovators to make and create in the digital world.

Your story

In recent years schools have reported that digital inequality is causing an increase in the digital skills gap. This disproportionally affects young people from underrepresented backgrounds, as they don't always have access to the equipment and support they need to grow skills in this area.

This gap has been further intensified by the pandemic. A recent survey carried out by University of Bristol’s Digital Futures Institute (BDFI) found that, during the pandemic, many households required technology and connectivity for home-schooling, yet reported  having insufficient devices to work effectively. At the same time, the UK tech industry is facing a massive digital skills shortage. A 2021 report from WorldSkills UK found that 76% of businesses will suffer from a shortage in digital skills that will negatively impact their revenues.

By supporting our project, you will be actively addressing digital inequalities. You will be helping people who might otherwise think “that’s not for me” to have the confidence and skills to pursue a career in tech. By supporting these people, you create a ripple effect through their diverse perspectives, leadership, and creativity, addressing educational inequalities and helping to solve industry challenges.

Where will the money go?

  • Hitting our minimum target will enable us to deliver a 12-week intensive programme in two schools
  • If we achieve our full target we will be able to deliver a number of additional activities that will teach participants valuable employability skills, while raising aspirations by giving them an insight into the tech world.
  • Any extra funds will enable us expand the programme to reach more young people across the city
  • We will give monthly programme updates
